I watched this episode in it's entirity (I can't spell by the way) because they had a "marathon" and the coupon mom part caught my ear as I was studying and doing homework. I always wondered why I saw pagent kids w/ pixie stix! So now they give them energy drinks?! wow...now THAT freaks me out. I don't even let my kids drink coke no less an energy drink and they aren't so little. That is just wrong. Unhealthy and wrong.
Cute little girl...and I am happy to see she has a high self esteem and seems quite happy doing pagents...her mom...well lets just say I don't agree with her parenting style and leave it at that.

OMG..I can not believe that video !.. What a disgusting so called mother she is. I feel sorry for the child really. She is going to be over weight like her mother from drinking..im assuming mountain dew..plus have rotten teeth to booth and the way she makes her prance around showing her stomach...umm can anyone say she is going to turn this child into a HOE before she hits puberty. I think the mother should get to the gym and forget the pageants. Dead god..ive seen it all.

I feel very sad for that little girl and the fact that they need sub-titles for the population at large to understand them speaking 'English'...

As others have said, how disturbing was that video? How is okay to exploit children like that? I don't have any 2 legged children, I have a beautiful loving tuxedo cat, Rachel, and I would never subject her to dressing up, shows etc.!! When did having a big, fat gut become an "in thing"? And for a 6 yr old child no less! I feel so sad for her, her attitude & the special juice she's drinking to "get up & moving" - Good Grief.
On a Good Note - Love, Love, Love your site & the idea you have for moderation. Since starting "serious couponing" last July, I have become a faithful daily follower of The Coupon Goddess!!

I am from the deep south and still had a difficult time understanding that child. Like many others, I found that clip extremely troubling on so many levels.

Coupons have saved me so much money over the last year. I stopped keeping track in March, but from Jan to Mar of 2011 my coupon savings totalled over $1,000.00 and that was just stocking up on toiletries. (Think razors, toothpaste, makeup, etc.) I have also managed to save around 55% a week on my grocery bill and I don't buy a lot of processed foods either. I cook from "scratch" the vast majority of the time and we are definitely meat and veggie eaters. Couponers are as varied as the people in the world. However, as we all know, only the "ridiculous" get any attention. Sad. But, if prople weren't watching the show would not be on.

There is something wrong when people who were born and bred in America need subtitles so you can understand what they are saying. I watched that show once, and it sickens me. I am a heavy coupon user, but still spend over $100. week on groceries for my family of 4. Most of it is spent on fresh fruit and vegetables. I don't have a problem with that, as I was spending $250. a week before.

The video was tragic. Even if there were only water as the "happy juice" or whatever it was called, the mother is teaching the child to reach for a bottle to get a personality or solve a problem. The child is not being taught to behave.

The mother was disgusting in many ways. Around here, a pageant mother who stood behind the judges and acted that way would be put in her place. That is not allowed.

I was a pageant mom for several years. But, I was a failure. My children won trophies without gobs of makeup, in the "wrong" color dresses, without beauty shop visits, and tantrums.

When I finally decided to stop was the day my child (4 yrs)who had never been in a pageant won third runnerup and the other mothers of older children who had had modeling lessons got angry because my child won. Besides, all I ever heard was how much was spent of the dresses and how long the child sat in the chair to get hair and makeup done.

I don't buy all the junk I can get with coupons, no matter how cheap it will be.

As for the video, I do think it borders on child abuse. What does it teach this child? She cannot express herself, fat is good, beauty is skin deep, behavior or decorum is not expected...I could go on and on. It's no childhood that I ever envision for anyone.

Thanks, love the blog so much! When I started couponing a little less than a year ago my goal was just to get the toiletries/paper goods for free/cheap. I am staying home with my baby now but I still want to go to the salon for my hair and buy the makeup I have always used. I started by just focusing on those things. Now I am also working on the groceries but I am finding it a lot harder than the drugstores. CVS is my favorite!!!

I am part of Boston Parent Bloggers, a fairly new member, and met you briefly at the Fashion Playtes Event.

Since then I have been following your blog and just recently began clipping coupons. I whole heartedly agree with you. I always thought if you used coupons you bought all junk food. After two weeks of clipping coupons and shopping I can say that you are 100% right! You can shop for healthy food and still save money with coupons!

That video is disturbing on so many different levels. That mother, if one could call her that, should be ashamed of herself. I don't normally like to judge people but how can she think this is right is beyond me.
Good for you Mel for doing the right thing. My kids like junk food but it's all about moderation. I have two fit children ages 17 (girl) and 20 (boy).

Just be careful what you call healthy. Most "whole grain" cereal is loaded with sugar. Most "low cal salad dressing" (well, really most diet food for that matter) contains cellulose (GROSS!). Tuna is contaminated with mercury - so it should be enjoyed sparingly. All traditional peanut butter (Jiff, Skippy, unless specified natural) contain hydrogenated oils. Read labels.

There is nothing funny about that video either. It is child abuse and a perfect explanation why this country's obesity problem is not going away.

Melanie, I thoroughly enjoy your blog and find you quite inspiring. I came across your blog and well, it just makes my day to read your posts and get your helpful tips! It has prompted me to get more serious about couponing, I've been a rookie for a while, and hope to move up to the majors soon since I've bought my first binder and plan on retiring the small pendaflex file!
Personally, I don't think you need to prove anything because if everyone reads your posts they know what a foodie you are, that you like good, fresh food and prepare great, healthful meals for your family...with a fabulous dessert thrown in there too!
You are an inspiration...keep blogging and I can't wait to hear more about your Trader Joe finds...I love TJ's!
