Stocking Up

As I shared with you towards the end of 2011, my goal for the next several months is to rebuild my stockpile. Now that I'm moving around and close to my old routine, it's time to get serious about stocking up on the things we need when there's a bargain to be had.

We go through a lot of cereal around here. I could offer my girls homemade french toast and bacon, but they'd rather have cereal. Odd little ducks that they are. And with four kids in house, a box of cereal doesn't go very far. Maybe two days, max. I blame this solely on the teenagers, of course.

After this week's Stop&Shop cereal sale, which was coupled with free milk, I've been able to refill the shelves with the kid's favorite cereals. Well, that's not entirely true. They'd rather the shelves be full of Cookie Crisp and Count Chocula, but that isn't going to happen, much to their chagrin.

Now I need to find some deals on trash bags, dish detergent (high hopes for that $2.15 Finish coupon), salad dressing (not sure how I got low on that), juice (where are the Ocean Spray coupons?), and food in general. Hopefully by spring I'll have the stockpile up to where it was prior to the accident. It amazes me how fast the family plowed through the stockpile.

But I'll tell you this, I still have enough Tampax to take care of all the cheerleaders in the NFL. Tampax and toilet paper are the two things I most likely won't run out of anytime soon. And Glade candles. Try as I may, I cannot get rid of those things. I swear they are like bunnies and multiply while I sleep. If I never see another Glade coupon again, I'll be just fine. Thank you very much. ;)

How about you? What are you low on? Are there any coupons in particular that you are hoping for this year?

There are some killer deals at Wal-mart for overage or free from the 1/8 coupons.

Free razors+ overage
Free nabisco snacks
Free cortaid+overage
Free benefiber +overage

I am in need of everything as well and struggle to keep up with just 4 of us lol

Not sure if you've got a Shaws in your area, but I find my best deals on juice in their dairy clearance section. Unfortunately, it is usually very close to the sell-by date and it must be refrigerated. However, I've heard you can freeze a lot of it (OJ especially) but I've never done it myself!

And I swear I haven't seen a decent sale on salad dressing in FOREVER! Unless of course you're committing coupon fraud and using coups for 16 oz on the 8 oz bottles! But That's just wrong!

Seeing your cereal stockpile made me laugh at myself. We go through a box or so per week and I stocked up this week, too. However, I've been storing my cereal boxes standing up (like at the store) and they don't all fit on my shelf. I consider myself pretty bright, and yet I never even thought of stacking them on their sides... duh..

I know you have to know this already- because you are the Coupon Goddess after all- but there is a killer deal on dishwashing detergent this week at CVS. Buy 9 Quantum Finish at $3.50 ($31.50), use 9 $2.15 q's (-$19.35) pay $12.15 and earn a $10 CVS giftcard. Thats $2.15 (plus tax) for 9 boxes! Of course- my store is wiped plum clean but like you always say- their rainchecks are golden : )

What am I hopeful for? Space. I have every cabinet, drawer and closet packet with toilet paper, paper towels, chex mix, and shampoo. I want a stockpile room. I'm considering converting the dining room into one- but so far I can't get my family on board. We'll see : )

Hi Melanie,

I love your site. You are so helpful and encouraging. I just really appreciate you! I did the cereal deal this week too and although multigrain cereal doesn't put a huge smile on my son's face, I was proud of my shopping trip!

I am also low on trash bags and on the look out for some deals.

Hi Mel,
I bought cereal this week at CVS for the EBs and stocked up on toothpaste and toilet paper, too. Hubby and I are in desperate need of razor blades, but I hate paying the prices. They got us hooked on the Gillette razors that were free after ebs a couple of years ago and now we don't want to use any others. Lots of coupons for the razors, but none for the blades.
For storage, I bought a couple of tall white storage cabinets for the basement and they did the trick. Also converted my hall coat closet into a cupboard. How desperate is that?

I am low on deo. I have more mens deo than anything. Nothing for me but then I don't care if I smell like a man as long as I am clean.

My kids don't eat cereal, I know, they are crazy..........

I did the CVS Finish deal worked great. Marshfield had plenty left as of Tuesday.

I am just curious - How much was the cereal in your S&S? I live in CT so I often think the prices are higher here :(

Seeing your photo made me feel so much better. I have 2 kid and a husband who eat a lot of cereal. Between Stop and Shop and Price Chopper I bought 18 boxes of cereal yesterday. My 4 year old walked into the pantry this morning and said "whoa! where did all of that cereal come from?" I think he is the only one in the house that has a good view of it on the top shelf because he is the shortest. Myhusbnad also asked why I didn't have any coupons to get more, he seems to be enjoying the money saving. Thanks so much for all of your info on your site.

I live in metro west area of Ma around 30 miles west of Boston my S&S cereals the ones in the promo were 3.69 a box minus the 4.00 and then the 4.50 milk coupon so still a good deal in my mind. I only used 1.00/2 coupons because I used all of my doubleable ones at Price Chopper for the 5/10 special.

Hi Melanie!
I am sooooo holding out for a killer sale on the Finish...we don't have a CVS, so hopefully something comes up! Also, hoping for a killer Charmin deal, I have those awesome blinkies...and I wanna use them up!
I am also hoping for sales on laundry soap, bar soap, and above all.....food sales and decent coupons to pair with!

Love to see your shopping trips and that you are back in the swing of things! ;0)

Hi there, I take your experience as a good lesson on why continuing with the stockpile is never a bad idea. We (in western Canada) had $3 off coupons for finish Quantum. it was fun (to me) to show my husband the math of how much cheaper the 20 pk is with coupon compared to larger "value" packs. I was able to get them for $2 (reg price for the 20 pk is somewhere around 9 or 10 dollars!!) Not free, and maybe not as cheap as other detergents but it works great.....ok sorry I started rambling on. I really just wanted to say that I'm glad to see you out there building up your stockpile (and strength) just like me.

I'd like to see them bring back the coupons on the cereal boxes for free ice cream this year! Mmmmm

There was a high value Finish coupon??? How did I miss this? My stock of it is the lowest its been in years!! I was actually thinking I may have to pay full price GASP!!!

I need a great sale for rice. And Propel water or any flavored water. And maybe some trash bags, like we all ;)

By the way, Stop & Shop has $1 Ken's 16oz dressing this coming week (after coupon). I know it's not free but decent, right?

Hey again Mel. Thanks for making me feel good about stocking up on food. I've gotten some nasty comments lately from other shoppers when I purchase 20 boxes of cereal or 30 bags of frozen veggies. People should remember, what may last one family a year only lasts some other families a month (or if we're lucky), two months. And I totally agree with you and am keeping fingers crossed for lots of FOOD coupons (with deals to match) in 2012. In your totally terrific sense of humor, 40 free tubes of toothpaste is wonderful, but my kids won't eat it on their pancakes, not that I've tried that ;) Nancy R. (PA)

Hey Melanie, I see a couple comments above regarding the Finish deal at CVS. But I thought the sale was for the 10-20ct. boxes, and the coupon was for 25ct or higher?? Is the 25ct box included in the CVS sale? If not, that coupon should not be used on the smaller boxes. Maybe I missed something.... But as much as we all love a good deal, we need to make sure to use the coupons correctly.

Hi guys! I will pop back in here later to respond more fully, but I just wanted to answer Sara's question.

That coupon is the most terribly worded coupon ever. The 25 count is referring to the Quantum, not the Powerball.

So, yes, you can use it on the CVS deal. People have even called Finish directly to get clarification on the wording and legal use, and they verified that it can be used on the 20 pack Finish Powerball.

But be forewarned that the cashiers might give you grief. It's so poorly worded.

Great, glad it can be used on the CVS deal. Thanks for answering back Melanie!

Glad to see your stockpile building back up Melanie! Cereal does disappear quickly! I lost it when you said you had enough Tampax for all the cheerleaders in the NFL! LMAO! I didn't know that Glade candles reproduce like tribles!
