Shrek Smoothies

Have you stepped on the scale post holiday ham, sugar cookies and Grandma Edna's fudge? Did you step off and recalibrate the scale to make sure it wasn't broken? Did you drop on the bathroom floor and cry like a baby when you saw the cold hard truth?

Did you promise God that you'd eat carrot sticks and plain Mini Wheats for life if He'd just make a few of those pounds vanish? Did you blame your kids because they are the reason you baked like a lunatic for two weeks?

It's ok. I'm right there too. That's why I'm going to share my new morning breakfast drink with you, which I hope will encourage you to start your day in a healthier way. It's affordable. It's loaded with good for you vitamins and minerals. And it will most likely freak your kids out.

The first time I made this smoothie, my kids came running in to watch because they love smoothies. In went the banana, in went the frozen peaches and mango, and then I pulled out a bag of fresh spinach. That's when their faces dropped and the horror set in. You're putting THAT in there? I nodded and pressed the blend button and they watched with morbid curiosity.

A neon green drink may not look entirely delicious, I admit that. But the interesting thing is that you can't taste the spinach. If you close your eyes and take a sip, you'd swear you're drinking a banana smoothie.

My littlest ones were at first disgusted, but then intrigued when I called it a Shrek smoothie. It's funny how a name can change everything. They cautiously took a sip and guess what? They loved it. And my boys? I had to pay my 17 year old to try it. He just couldn't get past the green even though he admitted that all he could taste was the banana.

So, how do you make one of these? It's pretty simple. One banana, one cup of your favorite frozen fruit, a big ole hand full of spinach, and some milk. I don't add any extra sweetener, but you can add honey or sugar if you'd like.

As Dr. Seuss would say.....

Try it, try it, you will see, you may like it just like me!

I'll try it. It actually sounds pretty good. The iron ought to be good for me since I had a tkr and need the iron. Thanks for a great idea, Mel.

Shrek smoothies sound a lot more fun than just a plain "green" smoothie.

What kind of blender do you use? I've heard that unless you have one of those horribly expensive blenders that you end up with spinach chunks that aren't very appetizing.

I add blueberries to cover the color. Mine is usually blueberries, strawberries, spinach, protein powder and almond milk. My 2 year old loves them, my 4 year old won't go near it.

Rebecca, i'm not sure what she has but i have a General Electric blender made for walmart that does a great job on smoothies. My mom bought it for a birthday gift when she saw my weak blender. I wanna say it was in the $50 price point. It has a basic on and off with a heavy metal blade. I've had it for about 4 years now and it rocks. No need for an expensive machine. I also put the spinach in first so it closer to the blade.

Sarah, thank you! I've been using a Hamilton Beach, which has been working ok, but has one of those dispenser holes that gets gunk in it. I REALLY want something simple, no frills, and no extra crevices for nastiness to accumulate. ;)

Green smoothies look gross and never appealed to me although intellectually I knew it was good for me. Calling a Shred smoothie just won me over. I never put in the ice cubes, just frozen fruit. And, I never add any sugar, fruit syrup, or honey. It always seems plenty sweet to me. Your little girl is just precious.

Oh yes! I recalibrated the scale. Sad part is, I didn't intend to weigh myself. I was weighing the new puppy to make sure he's thriving. He is, and apparently so am I!

Yeah, it does look nasty, but if you can get around the green of it, then you will like it. As far as the blender goes, I just have a mid range Kitchen Aid blender. The spinach really adds no flavor, just lots of nutrients. Just drink it with your eyes closed. Your body will thank you.

Those things taste surprisingly good! Our recipe is a little different, but either way, I like them! And my little girl has those same monkey jammies, just in the footed version - so cute :)

mmm Banana smoothies are wonderful! I would also be like your 17 year old and probably have to drink this with my eyes shut haha. I think I could just put it in one of those solid color cups with the lid and straw lol

That sounds yummy! I made pistachio pudding one time and the kids called it "shrek snot". They ate it though!

I made one for lunch today. I didn't put as much spinach because mine isn't as green as yours. Next time I'll try for more. It's good. Pretty much tastes like a banana smoothy. Thanks!
