If you go by what's offered in the Sunday coupon inserts, one could assume that we live off of Lunchables, Hamburger Helper, frozen dinners loaded with sodium, and countless other processed food products represented in those Sunday inserts.
And I'll admit that there's a lot of crap in those Sunday inserts, but there are some real gems as well. Just recently I've stocked up on light tuna fish, real fruit juice, low cal salad dressings, whole grain cereal, whole grain pasta, frozen fruit, and many other food products that I'll proudly feed my family. All for pennies on the dollar. All healthy in moderation.
I'll even take it one step further and say that if you forget the food altogether, couponing can still make a huge difference in your quest for eating healthier. If you no longer have to spend cash on toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo/conditioner, dish liquid, laundry soap, paper products and a slew of other products couponers get for cheap or free, you can take that money and buy the fresh produce and meat that's so darn expensive these days.
So, where am I going with this, you ask? I'm making some changes. Nothing drastic, just a few tweaks to better represent what I believe in. I believe that you can coupon and still eat well. I believe that being healthy is important. I also believe that moderation is key and that you don't have to give up everything you enjoy for the sake of being fit.
If I eliminated every treat, my kids would most likely move in with Grandma. Therefore, I will still stock up on things they enjoy like cookies, ice cream, and other sweets, because you can still be healthy and enjoy these things in moderation. Moderation. It's my word for the year.
But more importantly, I'm stocking up on the good stuff.
Products that can help me cook healthful meals that taste good. Foods that can be used as a base to help make meals more affordable. Yeah, I'm talking about you, Mr. Barilla whole grain pasta. Nothing but love for you baby!
Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are great and all, but let me tell you, boy is peanut butter good used in a savory sauce. Have you ever tried chicken satay? I see a good recipe blog post coming down the pike.....
One of my goals for this year is to be an example of a couponer who is moderate. To show the world that couponers are normal people who not only save a ton of money, but also care about what they feed their families. And to prove that a "fit couponer" is not an oxymoron.
Of course I'm still going to bake decadent treats now and again, but what I really want to do is share more recipes that utilize products we get for free/cheap that can be used to make wholesome meals that are good for ourselves and for our families.
And because this post seems so very serious in tone, I want to leave you with something that will make you laugh. Or make you scratch your head. Your choice.

Waaaa! Have I ever commented on how jelly (jealous) I am that you guys can double coupons on the east coast and that you have catalina deals for food? Cuz here in So Cal we cant do that. BUT I guess it could be worse with our 80 degree winter weather...=)
That video was hilarious and did leave me scratching my head; thanks for sharing it!
I'm excited to see what goodies you have in store for us! You always have the best recipes!!!

Melanie - I love your blog. You are so correct that most people view those of us who use coupons as the ones they show on TLC's Extreme Couponing throwing candy bars and all that stuff into the carts and getting it for free. People need to take notice and realize the value they throw out each Sunday.
And the video, it makes me shake my head and just wonder why people do what they do!
Thank you for all of your time you put into the blog!
Felicia
Should I be embarrassed to say we watched that episode of "Toddlers and Tiaras'? :) It left my 7-year old daughter just shaking her head and told me I'd better not get like that or she was moving in with grandma! :)
Thank you for all you do! Thank you for "keeping it real" :)
We watched it too! I think you have to laugh or you would cry!
We have to eat gluten free at our house and if it weren't for the household goods coupons we wouldn't be able to have to $6.00l loaf of bread!
Can't wait fort he recipes !
I have to say I'm a little sad I sat through all 6 minutes of that video... that's 6 minutes of my life gone forever. GOOD GRIEF. Wow.
That aside.... YES! Yes yes yes! See, if we as couponers never ever buy another bathroom product again, then we'll be able to have the money to purchase all the fresh fruits and veggies we want to add to our dinners. I will say that I do use hamburger helper a lot. I use ground turkey not beef, and I normally add tomatoes and onions and carrots to the pot and serve with a yummy salad. If you're using the "processed" foods to start a meal or make a base, I see no wrong in that. Now, the wrong comes from eating helper ten days a week, you know?
I'm all on board with you, Mel, MODERATION PEOPLE! :)
yay! im so excited! i am trying to hard to find ways to lower my grocery bills with HEALTHY foods for my family. i just need to get more creative i know!
Wow...That video is disturbing...what is our world coming to??
Can I just say I'm super happy my daughter doesn't like soda? ;)
I kind of feel bad for the little girl. She will definitely have some weight issues later. But at least she seems to have a great self-esteem ;)
Anyway, great post once again!
Melanie, I thoroughly enjoy your blog and find you quite inspiring. I came across your blog and well, it just makes my day to read your posts and get your helpful tips! It has prompted me to get more serious about couponing, I've been a rookie for a while, and hope to move up to the majors soon since I've bought my first binder and plan on retiring the small pendaflex file!
Personally, I don't think you need to prove anything because if everyone reads your posts they know what a foodie you are, that you like good, fresh food and prepare great, healthful meals for your family...with a fabulous dessert thrown in there too!
You are an inspiration...keep blogging and I can't wait to hear more about your Trader Joe finds...I love TJ's!
Just be careful what you call healthy. Most "whole grain" cereal is loaded with sugar. Most "low cal salad dressing" (well, really most diet food for that matter) contains cellulose (GROSS!). Tuna is contaminated with mercury - so it should be enjoyed sparingly. All traditional peanut butter (Jiff, Skippy, unless specified natural) contain hydrogenated oils. Read labels.
There is nothing funny about that video either. It is child abuse and a perfect explanation why this country's obesity problem is not going away.
Melanie,
Thanks again for another great post! I get soooo excited when I see a new post from you. Makes my day! Thank you and keep up what you're doing.
Kate
We all have our own definition of what "healthy" food is, but I do appreciate your blog being a much more healthy coupon blog than most.
I really appreciated your post on TJ's. I hope you might be able to post more from such stores.
That video was so sad on so many levels. There was no laughter over here as it almost brought me to tears.
I hope you are feeling well. Your healing and recovery have been in my prayers.
That video is disturbing on so many different levels. That mother, if one could call her that, should be ashamed of herself. I don't normally like to judge people but how can she think this is right is beyond me.
Good for you Mel for doing the right thing. My kids like junk food but it's all about moderation. I have two fit children ages 17 (girl) and 20 (boy).
Special drink. Maybe red bull with some color added? Geez.
I am part of Boston Parent Bloggers, a fairly new member, and met you briefly at the Fashion Playtes Event.
Since then I have been following your blog and just recently began clipping coupons. I whole heartedly agree with you. I always thought if you used coupons you bought all junk food. After two weeks of clipping coupons and shopping I can say that you are 100% right! You can shop for healthy food and still save money with coupons!
Thanks for showing us a better way!
I can't believe I just watched that whole clip! Anyways, makes me realize what kind of mother I DON'T want to be!
I don't post very often but read your blog all the time! So, I am definitely looking forward to you posting about healthier options while couponing. Please share the deals with us as much as possible!
Hey, Mary? Where in SoCal are you shopping?? Vons and Ralphs BOTH double coupons up to $1! :)
I could only watch a minute or two of that video. That poor little girl. *sigh*
Did you get that peanut butter recently? I am looking for a good deal on some any tips??? I thought I stocked up (somewhat) but I guess it wasn't enough!
Thanks, love the blog so much! When I started couponing a little less than a year ago my goal was just to get the toiletries/paper goods for free/cheap. I am staying home with my baby now but I still want to go to the salon for my hair and buy the makeup I have always used. I started by just focusing on those things. Now I am also working on the groceries but I am finding it a lot harder than the drugstores. CVS is my favorite!!!
Thanks so much!
I thought that the clip was hysterical! I know pagentry wouldn't be something that I would participate in but to each his own. I think that the show exposes us to another side of parenthood.
I love your blog and find it very informative. Keep up the good work!
Love your blog Mel, and I like your take n using what you coupon in healthy meals. I look forward to your posts!
As for the video, I do think it borders on child abuse. What does it teach this child? She cannot express herself, fat is good, beauty is skin deep, behavior or decorum is not expected...I could go on and on. It's no childhood that I ever envision for anyone.
Melanie,
I have awarded you with a "Versatile Blog Award". I love your blog and wanted to let you know it. You may review the post here: http://theblessedcouponer.com/2012/01/19/blessed-couponer-voted-versatile-blog-award/
The video was tragic. Even if there were only water as the "happy juice" or whatever it was called, the mother is teaching the child to reach for a bottle to get a personality or solve a problem. The child is not being taught to behave.
The mother was disgusting in many ways. Around here, a pageant mother who stood behind the judges and acted that way would be put in her place. That is not allowed.
I was a pageant mom for several years. But, I was a failure. My children won trophies without gobs of makeup, in the "wrong" color dresses, without beauty shop visits, and tantrums.
When I finally decided to stop was the day my child (4 yrs)who had never been in a pageant won third runnerup and the other mothers of older children who had had modeling lessons got angry because my child won. Besides, all I ever heard was how much was spent of the dresses and how long the child sat in the chair to get hair and makeup done.
I don't buy all the junk I can get with coupons, no matter how cheap it will be.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABY GIRL!!!!
There is something wrong when people who were born and bred in America need subtitles so you can understand what they are saying. I watched that show once, and it sickens me. I am a heavy coupon user, but still spend over $100. week on groceries for my family of 4. Most of it is spent on fresh fruit and vegetables. I don't have a problem with that, as I was spending $250. a week before.
Can you include more coupons for organic products? I like to feed my family organic food and use all natural cleaning products.
I am from the deep south and still had a difficult time understanding that child. Like many others, I found that clip extremely troubling on so many levels.
Coupons have saved me so much money over the last year. I stopped keeping track in March, but from Jan to Mar of 2011 my coupon savings totalled over $1,000.00 and that was just stocking up on toiletries. (Think razors, toothpaste, makeup, etc.) I have also managed to save around 55% a week on my grocery bill and I don't buy a lot of processed foods either. I cook from "scratch" the vast majority of the time and we are definitely meat and veggie eaters. Couponers are as varied as the people in the world. However, as we all know, only the "ridiculous" get any attention. Sad. But, if prople weren't watching the show would not be on.
Love your blog. I look forward to reading it every day. So glad your healing is progressing so well.
Did the mom seriously "burp" in front of the camera. Had to go back just to make sure. Yes I'm scratching my head. I do watch this show for some reason I find it very intersting.
I can't wait until you share your take on healthy meals with our couponed items. Sometimes I need some inspiration.
Oh--that video is the very reason I banned "go-go juice" from my kids life.
AS SOON AS I read the title of your post, I immediately thought of that Toddlers & Tiaras woman! And then as I was reading through, I was TOTALLY gonna mention her in my comment to you - just proves that great minds think alike, honey boo boo chile!
Yes couponers can live a healthy life "IF" they choose to. It's all up to each and everyone of us to make that decision.
The video.......ew ew ew ewwwwww. Nasty people!
I sure hope that kid doesn't turn out like her MOM. ! Nasty!
Honestly, I don't coupon. Hmmm..perhpas I should.
As for the video - words fail me.
Looking forward to meeting you at Blissdom :)
As others have said, how disturbing was that video? How is okay to exploit children like that? I don't have any 2 legged children, I have a beautiful loving tuxedo cat, Rachel, and I would never subject her to dressing up, shows etc.!! When did having a big, fat gut become an "in thing"? And for a 6 yr old child no less! I feel so sad for her, her attitude & the special juice she's drinking to "get up & moving" - Good Grief.
On a Good Note - Love, Love, Love your site & the idea you have for moderation. Since starting "serious couponing" last July, I have become a faithful daily follower of The Coupon Goddess!!
Happy, Happy Birtday to you Melanie!! I am so happy that you are doing so much better after that terrible accident. All of our prayers are being answered & we all are continuing to enjoy & learn daily from a True, Genuine Star!!!!
Happy Birthday Melanie! I saw someone mention that in the comments above. Great post on healthy couponing and moderation. The video... well, I can't even express how sad it made me feel. I feel very sad for that little girl and the fact that they need sub-titles for the population at large to understand them speaking 'English'...
OMG..I can not believe that video !.. What a disgusting so called mother she is. I feel sorry for the child really. She is going to be over weight like her mother from drinking..im assuming mountain dew..plus have rotten teeth to booth and the way she makes her prance around showing her stomach...umm can anyone say she is going to turn this child into a HOE before she hits puberty. I think the mother should get to the gym and forget the pageants. Dead god..ive seen it all.
I watched this episode in it's entirity (I can't spell by the way) because they had a "marathon" and the coupon mom part caught my ear as I was studying and doing homework. I always wondered why I saw pagent kids w/ pixie stix! So now they give them energy drinks?! wow...now THAT freaks me out. I don't even let my kids drink coke no less an energy drink and they aren't so little. That is just wrong. Unhealthy and wrong.
Cute little girl...and I am happy to see she has a high self esteem and seems quite happy doing pagents...her mom...well lets just say I don't agree with her parenting style and leave it at that.
