As the reports came in this past week from various parts of the Country with people celebrating fantastic clearance hauls from the beloved semi-annual Target toy clearance, I was starting to feel like the last girl invited to the dance. Seriously it was getting depressing. Blog post after blog post of other people's toy finds that would've even made Santa jealous were starting to really irritate me. And I almost said to hell with it, but something possessed me to head out one last time yesterday to see if by some miracle Target would finally come through and put up those dang 75% off signs.
When I walked into Target I wasn't even going to grab a carriage because I was certain that the toys would still be at 50% off, but being the eternal optimist that I am, I grabbed a carriage just in case. Good thing I did. As I rounded the corner I knew I hit pay dirt because there were scores of other mommies pushing overflowing carriages that were stuffed with every kind of toy imaginable. And before I get to the good stuff and tell you about the toys, I want to talk about the women who were buying them. (this of course includes me)
There are certain times of life when a woman forgoes makeup. The birth of a child would be at the top of the list. Unless of course you are one of those fruit cakes who does your face before you give birth so you can look good for your after-birth pictures. The only rosy glow a woman should have after giving birth to a baby should be from the broken blood vessels on your cheeks from pushing the little bundle of joy out. Next, any time of sickness would warrant not wearing makeup. When I'm puking my guts out I'm not really going to care what I look like, so mascara is not needed. After childbirth and sickness, the next time a woman (at least this woman) might say to hell with makeup could most likely be the Target toy clearance. Go ahead and laugh at me, but I swear that all of the women shopping in those aisles yesterday shared my philosophy.....
When I left the house yesterday I looked in the mirror (not a pretty sight at 8am) and thought "please God, do not let me run into a reader today". I had no makeup on, my eyebrows were once again looking like two caterpillars in an intense love dance, and my hair was looking a little wild. Not a sexy come hither type of wild either. Wild like I can't find my freakin' hair brush because once again the girls decided to style their dolls hair with it and it's now buried in the bottom of the toy chest kind of wild. Nobody hunts for a hairbrush on a Target toy clearance day.
And just to let you know, God has a great sense of humor because I ran into at least ten readers yesterday (hello Laura!). Ten readers who probably all prayed the same prayer because we all looked like we had just rolled out of bed. Not from the same bed of course because that would just be wrong, but you know what I mean. We all scoured the aisles together looking for hidden treasure. All of us running from shelf to scanner to verify prices. Oohs and ahhs and the occasional words of praise about each other's finds because women need to encourage each other at all times. Even during clearance sales. We are givers that way.
And after we had scoured every shelf, inspected every end cap, and cased out all the other departments for clearance deals, we made our way to checkout with our overflowing toy stuffed carriages to face the register. For people who really love to save money, we sure spent a lot of the green stuff yesterday. But I'm sure that all of us now have overflowing gift closets for every birthday party, Easter basket, and tooth fairy visit for the rest of 2011. Let's see what I found.......
I was beyond excited to find the Barbies you see above and below marked at 75% off. $11.00 for a $44.00 collector's Barbie is a sweet find. It will be hard for me to part with these. Actually I just might keep them.
My Target stores had a huge selection of Disney merchandise on clearance. My girls are huge Disney fans, so when I saw the fairies above marked down to $3.00 I scooped them up. I think this would be an awesome gift from the tooth fairy. Don't you think?
And these mermaid Barbies were another awesome find. The perfect gift for the countless birthday parties the girls get invited to. And they swim! How cool is that?
There was such a wide selection and I bought a little bit of everything. I even found some cute stocking stuffers for next year. We all know how expensive those little stocking stuffers are.....
I found this dragon for my 4yr old nephew. He will love this for his birthday this year.
I'm not sure who this baby doll will be gifted to. She goes from crawling to walking and originally retailed for over $60.00! Toys like this make me crave babies. I swear my ovaries pop eggs when I see toys like this.
Ok, I'm not a Moxie Girlz fan, but my girl's friends are. At least these dolls have somewhat modest clothing covering their bodies. Not those skimpy mini skirts and half shirts typical to Moxie Girlz which makes them look like hookers. Did I really just type that? I meant to think it. I'm not even sure why they bother me so much. I don't know about your girls, but mine strip their Barbies of clothing immediately and they all end up in a naked jumbled heap anyway. All my girl's Barbies look like they've been vacationing at the resort Hedonism, so does it really matter?
Can I tell you that I bought this at full price for Leela's birthday? Sigh.
Final damage? Just shy of $180 for almost $1,000 worth of toys. A good investment which will cover every child's gift I need for 2011. Was it torturous waiting for this sale? Yes, but it was entirely worth the wait. Hitting the Target toy clearance on the first day of the sale was AWESOME! I'm delighted with my finds and can't wait to make a whole bunch of little people smile when I give them these gifts this year.
Ok, your turn. Did you hit the Target toy sale? What did you find?

Great finds, Mel! It's nice that after all the car troubles, the Target haul made up for it a little.
I hit my Target yesterday and the clearance aisles were completely barren, except for a few small toys. Luckily I was there a few days earlier and found the Penbo talking penguin that my daughter wanted for her birthday. It retails for $60 but was marked down to $14.99 so I was thrilled. I think my store marked things down 75% over the course of a few days and slowly put them out that way.
My Target is also currently undergoing a remodel so everything is a little bit screwy there. There's clearance at all different percentages all over the place.
Andi- Your store wasn't the only one with a staggered sale. We had the same issue at our stores this year. Actually there were some items still at 50% off yesterday. Congrats on Penbo. I almost bought him yesterday. I wasn't sure what it did which is why I didn't take him home. I almost got that $100.00 dollar Buzz Lightyear marked down to $24.99 but I don't have any little boys in my life currently. :(
I missed the 75% off clearance, and I live about 45 minutes from one, so it isn't worth the drive. But I did find some good deals at Target, Rite Aid & Walmart, so I already have a stack of toys for Toys for Tots next year. It is such a good feeling to drop off a stack of toys to make some child's Christmas!
That 1985 Peaches and Cream arbie made me smile and feel old at the same time. My little sister had that Barbie when it was new! (Back in 1985)
Jenn
Amen on fruitcakes who put makeup on before giving birth...
Amen on girls toys (and clothes) that encourage prostitution...
And Amen to 75% off toys!!
I have to say the same thing as Jenn -- that Peaches and Cream Barbie took me back! I wasn't playing with Barbies anymore then, but I still remember thinking she was fantastic when my sister got her as a gift.
Wow I am surprise with how much your store had left!! I was disappointed this week when I was "scouting" ahead of time to decide which store to check first on Thursday. Most stores had maybe 1 1/2 aisles of stuff and not even full aisles. It seemed rather sparse around here!
I did end up doing well and found most of the stuff I wanted. But I ended up going to all 3 of my closest stores to do it. The worst part was I didn't make it to the 1st store until almost 9AM because of preschool (torture)!!
I am with you on the makeup idea though.. I was rushing to get to preschool drop off that I said "screw it"! :-)
I am impressed and a tad bit jealous, I must say. I was at my local Target yesterday and there is nothing happening there! The toy clearance is still only at 50% and the shelves are bare!!! Hardly anything left at all! I was very disappointed, to say the least. I have 2 nephews with January birthdays and was hoping to score something cool for them. I ended up leaving empty-handed. (sad face)!

Hooray for your finds!! ;0)
Looks like you hit the jackpot with girl items...I am soooooo jealous! My youngest DD LOVES Moxie girls....I would have jumped all over those too! I was only able to score the complete set of Paperoni, TS Buckeroo, Transformers play set and a small Strawberry Shortcake set.....*sniff* LOL!
I am gonna try one more outta the way, obscure Target....hopefully, I'll hit pay dirt there!
I soooo went out with no makeup, my hair thrown in a ponytail and my joggers on....LOL! Of course this was AFTER I kicked my kids out at school.....LOL!!
Great pics! ;0)
I have been waiting anxiously for your post to see what you scored. Congratulations on your finds!!!
I also hit the toy sale yesterday. I spent $70 for 18 toys, which was great!!! I got some Polly Pockets, Littlest Pet Shops, Strawberry Shortcake, talking baby sets, a kinect set, and legos. I'm set with gifts for the year!!!! The best part is that my gift closet is full, so I don't have to run out everytime my children get invited to parties!! Yeah.
I was at Target yesterday looking for a birthday present and the sale toys are 30% and 50% off. Of course I didn't see anything I thought the boy would like. And they had the sale stuff spread over a few isles but the shelves were pretty sparse. After reading about the 75% sales I was bummed.
I spend $62 for over $250 worth of toys. I didn't get many but the ones I got are high value. A couple of my favorite finds - train table retailed at $79.99 for $19 and a race track priced at $89.99 for $22.
I was wondering why all the toys were marked down when I was at Target this week - talk about late to the party :) I scored a couple of tag books for $3.99 each (usually $14 each). Looks like you made out like a bandit.
My big score was a Bitty Baby knockoff wooden changing table/bed/high chair (one piece with each side a different purpose). $100 retail for $25!! Very heavy and awkward to store, but Santa has a full year to put it together!
Also picked up a few Olivia playsets. A cute house that converts to a pirate ship and little accessories. Orig. $30 for $7.50. Hello birthday parties!
Fantastic finds! I am looking forward to trying out our 'local' store. It's about 45 miles away on the mainland but if I can do half as good as you then I would be happy!
Quick question- Is the clearance price tag the price, or is it a % off the price tag?
Thanks!
I am completely jealous. Our nearest Target is over a hour away and I missed it. Oh how I LOVE Target, and you got some GREAT deals.
The clearance toy shelves at my Target were almost bare today! I was able to purchase 8 toys for $51.69. Original total would have been $143.22. My most awesome find was the Barbie Party Cruise ship-originally $39.99, I paid $9.98!! I'm saving it for my daughter's birthday this summer.
I am so depressed now. My Target had barren shelves. I scrolled the aisle when it was at 30% off and there were tons of things that I had my eye on for my little girl. I went back 3 days later and they had already shot up to 75% and the shelves were picked clean. Oh well, you win some you lose some. I did grab some of the smaller items though that will be good for Operation Christmas Child boxes this year.
Too funny Mel about the Moxie dolls. My daughters' Barbies all end up naked too, but I told my 9 year old straight out the Moxie and Brats dolls that I was not getting her dolls that look like hookers. I then had to explain that hookers were girl who didn't respect themselves, haha. I just can't stand that they sell these scantily clad, put the make up on with a trowel dolls.
Oh my! I just about cried when I saw that 1985 Barbie! I have been looking for these to go on clearance for so long! You see, I was born in 85 & my parents bought that Barbie for me. When I was old enough to play w/Barbies I took her out of the box & played with her every day for years! She was definitely my favorite! Well, w/all the moving my family did, my box of Barbies got lost & we never found that box. So, I lost my Peaches 'n Cream! If you ever do decide to part w/her, I'd be honored to take her into my home & adopt her as my own! ;)
oh Mel,I am so happy to see you caught the drals. I can truely hear the happiness in your writting. After the tough weeks you've had this seems to be just what you needed. It'S amazing how your joy can be felt through your writting!
I will say I'm amazed. I had NO idea. I've been hearing this crazy Target Toy thing happening but eh, it hadn't moved wind under my sails... uh... yah. oooops. Apparently it should have. I'm NOT a shopper. Like besides couponing for our groceries... I'm SO not a shopper. I can't go to the mall for hours, I can't walk around hobby lobby for an hour if I know what I want and where it is, I can't stand window shopping. I normally avoid Target at all costs.... I will however be listening in more intently next year for this sweet deal. I hadn't thought of birthday gifts for parties my son will be invited to later or for stocking up Easter baskets and such now...
learning.... still learning...
Lol, I have 3 little boys, so your selections were NOTHING like mine! I got 3 of the assault helicopters, some Discovery 3D reels, and paint balls and a gun for them for my "big" boy. So fun though!
WOW!! Very impressive!! I remember forking over huge amounts for birthday gifts for the parties my kids were invited to!!
Target is coming to CANADA!!! I heard from my friend who works at Zellers that they have bought 28 stores in Canada.

LOL, I was just thinking...I hope your kids don't read your blog and found out about their birthday gifts, or the tooth fairy! P.S. Bet you're out at Rite Aid now, scoring free/MM teep and MM facial tissues. :-)

I'm on my eay back from a weekend in west. Ma. Hitting lots rite aids on the way home. My mini van is loaded to the top and no clearing shelves. Carrie
Our small North Central Florida town is at the crossroads of 2 major roads running north-south and east-west. We are about 60 miles from Target Stores on the Atlantic Coast and 45 miles from a college town. It takes me over an hour to Target one way and 45 minutes the other.
What really hurts though is that we have a Distribution Center located in our county. It is reachable within a few minutes. Can we shop there? Nope. There have been rumors for years that Target was coming to town. Never happened. Sigh. Maybe some day.
So, y'all keep shopping the sales. It's good for our economy and maybe we'll even get a retail store that stocks 75% off items. Drool.
After some thought, I made the decision to skip Target's toy clearance this time, but I kept reading posts like yours, and felt like I was missing out on all the deals. So, when we went to Target for cat food on Saturday, I checked in the toy aisle. Wow, it was still at 50% (except for Kung Zhu, which was at 75%), and everything was completely picked over. Besides some nice Lego sets that were geared towards kids who are older than my almost-four-year-old, there wasn't much to see. Definitely not as good as everyone else has been reporting!
You got a ton of fantastic toys! Congrats!
Wow, how lucky! Our Target had one pitiful aisle of clearance and there was hardly anything good.
Wow Mel, you scored! Congrats. My first Target haul was great but I still needed a few items for kids(I was bday and Christmas shopping eek). My other stocked Target was still at 50 so I asked begged and pleaded to find that they will go down to 75 this week. I happened to be in the area on Sunday and had the urge that I should stop. When I got there, the signs were still at 50 but the shelves were almost empty. My heart sank. I was able to find a ponies hat box, some cute paperoni sets that I'd never seen and the big one was a barbie cruise party from $40 down to 9.98. I guess it was not in the plans to get the other items I coveted (probably the answer right there...I should not covet :) ) so I am happy with my total haul, spent around $200 this season and stocked my bday closet, finished all the family kids for christmas and got some nice items for my kiddos. Cant complain!
Aside from being sick all week. I finally had the chance to go to Target today. I was super disappointed that the entire toy sections was pretty much cleared out, but the clothing was still stocked. I had a great luck with a bunch of 70% off clothing for the kids and adults. Adult Christmas shopping (cha-ching). I managed to buy $310 worth of clothing for $80 bucks. I'm happy and my Christmas bin is getting full :-)
